Early laboratory research evaluated the volatile (essential oil) components of Artemisia tridentata and observed antibacterial activity against bacteria sourced from the rumen of mule deer when exposed to oil at specific concentrations.

Review of ethnobotanical reports document traditional external use of sagebrush across Indigenous North American practices. Historical accounts describe Great Basin sagebrush topically applied as poultices or washes for various skin concerns and wound care in traditional contexts.
